Origin: Iberian Peninsula (Spain & Portugal)
Size: Adults reach approximately 30–40 mm in length, making them one of the largest terrestrial isopods in the hobby.
Difficulty (Keeping): Medium; requires strong ventilation and a careful balance of moisture and dryness.
Breeding Difficulty: Medium; slower to reproduce compared to smaller isopod species.
Temperature: Maintain between 18–26 °C (65–79 °F).
Humidity: Moderate; provide a moisture gradient with one consistently damp area while keeping most of the enclosure drier. Constant high humidity without airflow can be harmful.
Ventilation: Excellent airflow is essential — use enclosures with plenty of cross-ventilation to mimic their natural rocky habitat.
Diet: Offer a varied diet of decaying leaf litter, rotting wood, vegetables, and supplemental protein sources such as fish flakes or dried shrimp. Provide a constant source of calcium, such as cuttlebone or limestone, to support healthy exoskeleton growth.
Habitat Setup: Use a substrate mix that holds some moisture but also dries out in areas, such as a blend of soil, sand, and leaf litter. Add cork bark, rocks, and hides to create microclimates. Always maintain one moist corner for hydration.
Additional Notes: Porcellio hoffmannseggii 'Orange', commonly called the “Titan Isopod,” is a true giant among isopods. Their impressive size and striking appearance make them a centerpiece species for advanced collectors. They are highly active, enjoy exploring rocky surfaces, and are best kept in colonies where their fascinating social behavior can be observed.
