Size: Approximately 3–5 cm as adults, with males generally larger and developing a distinctive flattened, T-shaped head horn.
Difficulty (Keeping): Easy; a hardy and adaptable flower beetle that is well suited to beginners when provided with appropriate substrate, ventilation, and access to climbing surfaces.
Breeding Difficulty: Easy to Moderate; breeds readily under suitable conditions. Larvae develop in decaying organic substrate and the complete generation generally takes around 8–11 months.
Temperature: 20–27°C (68–81°F), with around 23–25°C being suitable for breeding.
Humidity: Moderate; approximately 50–70%. Keep the substrate slightly moist rather than wet, with good ventilation. The species generally tolerates drier conditions better than constantly saturated substrate.
Note: Dicronorhina derbyana derbyana, commonly known as Derby's Flower Beetle, is a striking African flower beetle with a metallic green coloration that can show considerable variation. Males develop a characteristic flattened, T-shaped horn on the head. Adults feed readily on ripe fruit and beetle jelly, while larvae develop in decaying leaf and wood-based substrate.
